Westbourne v Ashling

19th June 2011

Westbourne 158 all out, Ashling 80 all out

Westbourne won by 78 runs

A poor batting performance cost Ashling their first defeat since the beginning of May. The pitch was an absolute pudding, the recent rain having left it soft and damp with lots of grass. Charlie Colley got Ashling off to a good start with two early wickets, but Bone (29) and Rickard (50) soon got the home side out of trouble. Steve Harvey (for it was I) came in for some punishment early on but finished up with 3 for 34, while Tom Ballingal bowled 6 overs for only 5 runs conceded. Rupert Hoare bowled a remarkable eleven ball over including three wides and two no-balls but could not manage a wicket. Peter Smith bowled creditably and finished with two wickets and a sharp catch.

Reeling from the loss of iconic overseas maestro Nic Loubser who was a bit poorly at home, Ashling's wickets tumbled with Cranna, Cross, Cook and Colley all going cheaply. Fergus MacLehose looked the best bet, but perished for the second week running caught on the boundary. When Tom Ballingal fell in similar fashion the last hope of a victory vanished, and despite a valiant rearguard action fron youngsters Charlie Colley and Henry Slatter, the draw could not be saved and the last wicket fell with six overs remaining.
