Ashling CC v St Johns Old Boys

29th July 2007

St Johns OB 88 all out: Ashling 77 all out

It was a day when we were pleased to be playing cricket all all following a week of heavy rain, but the thick, lush outfield always meant that there were not going to be many runs in this game. It took St Johns ten overs to put twelve runs on the board, and with the exception of Rosher (40), none of the batsamen were able to put a score together. Ashling used seven bowlers, all of whom contributed to SJOB's low total, the best figures being returned by Nic Loubser with 5-0-18-4.

Ashling looked to be cruising early on as Matt Sleep set about the bowling while Paul Colley steadied the other end. Colley eventually went for 3 and Bob Traylen's 3 didn't take long, but with stalwarts Loubser and Sleep at the crease it was surely only a matter of time. Unfortunately Nic found a fielder on 11, and something of a collapse ensued, with the fast bowling of Watson (8-6-2-3) being particularly difficult to deal with. Harvey (0), Mason (3), Stone (0), Shaul (6) and Gunning (0) all walked out before shortly afterwards walking back. During the carnage Mark Crundwell (17 not out) was quietly amassing runs at the other end, and when last man Sam Waterman came to the crease, twelve were needed from three overs. The question was whether Sam could see off the last couple of balls from the 37th over to let Mark have a crack at a grandstand finish. As the leg stump was knocked back we knew the answer.

This was a tremendously competitiveand sporting game culminating in the presentation of the Funtington Trophy to Ian Rosher of St Johns by the Chairman of the Parish Council. We look forward to winning it from them next year!
