Singleton v Ashling

15th August 2010

Singleton 159 all out, Ashling 163 - 7

Ashling won by 3 wickets

This game will live long in the memory principally for Fergus MacLehose's 133 not out which saw Ashling home with ten overs to spare. His innings included ten enormous sixes and nine fours and was one of the most exciting displays of big hitting seen in many years at the club.

Singleton won the toss and opted to bat. They rattled along at six an over with Martin Davies (72) taking a leading role. Tom Ballingal removed the other opener for 16. Ex-Sussex danger man Tim Robinson was run out for a duck in freakish circumstances as Steve Harvey deflected a drive onto the stumps with his boot with Robinson out of his ground. Even so at 100 for 2 after 20 overs a formidable total looked likely. Tom Ballingal took a good catch to dismiss Marin Davies, but split his finger in the process and took no further part in the game. In the end a mixture of determined bowling and sharp fielding restricted Singleton to 159 all out. Steve Harvey took 2 for 36, Fergus MacLehose took 2 for 38, but the bowling star was Henry Slatter whose figures read 8-0-18-3.

Singleton opened the bowling with Freya Davies, a 14 year old girl established in local womens' cricket. She bowled Nic Loubser first ball; 0 for 1. Simmo wondered if this was the first time Nic had been bowled by a girl, but he looked a bit cross so no-one really wanted to ask him. Then she bowled Johannes Wentzel for 0; 0 for 2. Then she took out Harry Quilter for 0; 4 for 3. Then Fergus came in. Chris Cranna (14) and then Dan Cooke (8), Mike Neville (0) and finally Steve Harvey (0 not out) had the privelege of standing at the opposite end watching Fergus dispose of Singleton's stock of cricket balls over a wide area of West Sussex.
