Ashling v Salthill 13th August 2006 Salthill 158, Ashling 77-4 match drawn Lobser 7-48, Sleep 3-64; Loubser 45 not out Various unavailabilities and holidays meant that it was a new-look Ashling side which took the field on an unsettled August afternoon. Salthill batted first and given that two players had wrongly anticipated that the match would be cancelled, Ashling did well to hold Salthill to 158 runs with only 9 fielders. Matt Sleep bowled a marathon 22 overs for his 3 for 64, and Dave Warr and Rob Bush pitched in on a day when bowling was in short supply. It was Nic Loubser who grabbed the headlines though. 11.1-1-48-7 represents the bowling performance of the season by some distance. Mick "no byes" Bleach acquitted himself well on his debut behind the stumps. In gathering gloom, and with a re-shuffled batting order, Ashling quickly found themselves tumbling towards defeat at 22-4. Thompson stopped the rot with a steady 12 before Loubser got a grip of the situation and with George Bleach supporting him batted Ashling to 77-4 and respectability. When the rain started to fall steadily soon after 6pm the captains shook hands on a draw, and both teams were grateful to have had an afternoon's entertainment. |
