Salthill v Ashling

21st August 2005

Ashling 195 for 4, Salthill 196 for 6

Chris Judd 61 n.o. Craig Mason 57 n.o. Chris Judd 3 for 42

Even now, several days later we cannot believe that we managed to lose this one. Some poor umpiring decisions from the home team served to raise the temperature on the field, but in truth Ashling had no-one but themselves to blame after the poorest display of fielding for many years.

Ashling got off to a steady start with Dick Holden (8) and Nick Loubser (25) putting 55 on for the first wicket - aided by 16 in wides! James Ford contributed a lively 25 and Matt Sleep added 7 before Chris Judd (61 not out) and Craig Mason (57 not out) added 107 for the fifth wicket.

The total was surely too much for Salthill, indeed they admitted as much over tea, and when Chris Judd removed both openers for ducks it looked like an early evening in the pub. A certain Mr Longland walked to the crease. On 10 he appeared to get a regulation thickish edge through to the keeper, but declined to walk and was given not out by the umpire. On 25 he appeared to have been stumped by some distance but the square leg umpire was not interested in this appeal either. None of this would have mattered if we had not then proceeded to drop Longland six times, three of which were absolute dolly catches. Longland went on to make 106 with Bishop (35) being the only other Salthill player to reach double figures. Some of the raucous barracking of the Salthill players from the boundary raised a few hackles, and certainly one or two of the more volatile Ashling players (hello Nick, hello Chris) were finding it hard to keep their cool. A season that began exceptionally well has since gone off the rails and we hope to be able to raise our game against the Magpies on bank holiday Monday if we are to win the Ashlings cup for the first time in many years.
