Ashling v Rogate

18th September 2005

Ashling 150-6 dec, Rogate 64 all out

Nick Loubser 49, James Ford 4-11

Pictures : Chris Judd, 4 chaps, Gone!

When these two sides last met on 17th July Rogate succeeded in frustrating the mighty Ashling machine by blocking every ball for an hour before the rain earned them a draw. It was therefore with some suspicion that we greeted the Rogate captain's refusal to play a limited overs game, insisting on the more traditional timed version of the game.

On a lovely late summer day the wicket proved to be unexpectedly lively with good length balls often rearing to shoulder height. Nevertheless James Ford and Nick Loubser put on 46 for the first wicket in good time before JF was undone by a ball that kept very low.Nick Jones (3) and Chris Judd (11) didn't hang around for long but NL looked in good form before skying a ball to mid off on 49! Paul Colley (9) and Craig Mason (24 not out) kept the scoreboard moving, although at a somewhat slower rate. Youngster James Nash came in and made his first run for the club before a cameo from Steve Harvey (12 not out) left Ashling in a position to declare on 150 for 6.

Rogate had an hour plus a guaranteed 20 overs in which to make the runs, but when Chris Judd bowled Davis in the first over and a brilliant throw from Nick Jones ran out Hudson in the next, Rogate were once again looking to survive for a draw. This time it was not to be. James Ford cut through the order with figures of 4-0-11-4, figures that would have looked even better if not for 5 no balls! Stuart Edwards chipped in with a wicket and Steve Harvey took the last two tail-end wickets to leave Rogate well short. We were in the pub by half past six to wish Chris Judd all the best for his return to SA in the hope that he will be back next season.
