Ashling CC v Magpies 27th August 2007 Magpies 172-5 (35 overs): Ashling 176-1 (26.3 overs); Loubser 102 n.o., Sleep 54 n.o. The Ashlings cup was retained for the third consecutive year with a crushing victory over the old adversaries on a pleasant summer's day in West Ashling. Rumours of a severely weakened Magpies team were countered by a large number of familiar faces, despite a few key absentees. Magpies opted to bat first and got off to a flying atart with an opening partnership of 51 in 9 overs between Rupert Style (45) and the stylish but more cautious Dutta (40). A mix-up led to Style's run-out, and the same run-rate was never again attained. Nontheless useful contributions from Ferguson (30) and Haddon (24) ensured that Magpies were able to post a challenging total of 172 from their alotted overs. Ashling used seven different bowlers, none of whom returned remarkable figures, but all of whom bowled tidily. Nic Loubser opened with Steve Harvey and thanks mainly to the big hitting of Loubser maintained the required run-rate. Harvey (12) eventually abandoned his supporting role after 18 overs, by which time Loubser had ridden his luck having been dropped 3 times. Matt Sleep set about the bowlers, and even the normally conservative Craigwell came in for some punishment. Nic Loubser's 102 not out included 7 sixes and 8 fours while Matt Sleep's 54 not out included 3 sixes and 6 fours. Ashling battered the Magpies bowling and won the match with 8 overs to spare. There was dancing on the street of East and West Ashling on the bank holiday as victorious captain Mark Crundwell accepted the trophy from the losing captain! The Tony Bastable man of the match award for 2007 unsurprisingly went to Nic Loubser. Next Year's match will take place on Sunday June 29th, and will be preceded by a Saturday golf contest on the Saturday. |
