Ashling v Hants Volunteers

16th July 2006

Ashling 229-3 dec (Sleep 104 n.o.), Hants Volunteers 108

On one of the hottest days for many years, Ashling were extremely keen to win to win the toss so that they would not have to field in the worst of the heat. We were therefore astonished upon losing the toss to be put in, especially since the pub side had apparently had a lengthy session in the Richmond Arms prior to the game. Paul Colley and Paul Simmonds started steadily before Colley was out for 26. Simmo went on to bat for 20 overs for his 19, wearing out most of the opposition batsmen in the process. Matt Sleep wasn't hanging about however, and succeeded in racking up another century (104 not, 3 sixes and 14 fours) before being retired by the captain. Steve Harvey (5) didn't trouble the scorers for long, but a typically agressive late effort from Nic Loubser (37 not) ably supported by Mark Crundwell (14 not) had surely put the game beyong Hants Volunteers.

The pub innings got off to the worst of all starts with the first ball of the innings from Craig Mason resulting in a good catch, the first of two, from George Bleach. Hants were never going to get anywhere near the Ashling total, and only stubborn resistance towards the end prolonged the match beyond 20 overs. The wickets were shared around between Mason (5-3-2-4), Bush (5-0-2-20), Stone (4-0-2-16) and Loubser (3-0-2-6). George Bleach took the other wicket thanks to a catch in the deep from Nic Loubser. In all a good day's work, and a good warm-up for next week's outing to Arundel Castle.
