Ashling v Havant A

7th May 2005
Havant A 82 all out, Ashling 83-2

I. King 26, M. Crundwell, N. Jones 4-9

After the disappointment of losing the first two games of the season to the weather, it was great to get down to business at last. Saturday was bright and breezy and the square looked good thanks to the hard work of Dick Holden. The heavy roller still wouldn't start so the pitch was a little on the soft side but perfectly playable.

Havant A won the toss and opted to bat. With Chris Judd, Ashling's South African import opening from the pavilion end with his increasingly hostile fast-medium deliveries, and Craig Mason bowling his usual accurate medium pace, Havant soon found themselves in trouble at 19-3 with two early lbw deliveries going ashling's way and a sharp catch behind the stumps from Paul Colley for CJ's second wicket of the day. Chris strained a knee and gave way to Nick Jones who was returning to the club after a period of university study - this was whan the fun started! His final figures of 5-2-9-4 tell their own story. Ashling's other South African debutant, Nick Loebser, weighed in with 2 for 10 and Stuart Edwards' 1 for 4 off 4 overs reflected an aggressive spell. Only some rather friendlier bowling from yours truly (Steve Harvey) allowed Havant to reach any worthwhile total at all.

In the end, Ashling reached the required total without any undue upset. Mark Crundwell looked very comfortable at the crease, scoring 26 including a big leg-side six, before falling to a magnificent diving catch. Nick Jones was out for two from a ball that kept very low before Ian King, unbeaten on 26 and Nick Loebser (15 not out) saw Ashling home.
