Ashling v Hants V Volunteers

9th August 2009

Hants V 198-9 (40 overs) Ashling 199-3 (33.2 overs)

This was a tremendous game played in warm and pleasant conditions, a complete contrast to the sodden afternoon against the same opposition in May. In truth we did not approach this game with any great confidence, very few of the regular eleven were available, and Ashling took the field with a number of "occasionals" and two juniors including the eleven-year-old Charlie Colley.

When Mike Neville's (8-0-35-3) opening over saw two wickets go down, and in no time at all Hants falling to 6-3 things were looking a bit different. The fourth wicket pair of Lounsborough (23) and Nash (38) rescued the situation up to a point, but some canny bowling from Paul Colley (8-0-32-3) had the Volunteers in some difficulty at 92-8. Somehow Ashling contrived to let them off the hook with the eighth wicket pair of Symonds (22 not out) and Woodhouse (45) taking the score to 198 aided by some wayward bowling.

Given that Ashling had only one frontline batsman together with half a dozen, at most, who might chip in, it did not look promising, but it was to be Ashling's South African contingent who carried the day. Nic Loubser hit a brilliant 106, ably supported by Johannes Wentzel (48 not out) which meant that by the time Paul Colley (13 not out) came to the crease with only three wickets down it was fairly plain sailing.

A good game, a great result.
