Ashling v Hants Volunteers 17th May 2009 It was cold, it was wet, it was miserable. The captains had already called the game off once at 3pm when it stopped raining. Out we went, ankle deep in mud to an outfield that you'd have struggled to get a hovercraft over, let alone a cricket ball. Ashling won the toss, and since going to the pub was not an option, opted to bat. Harvey and Loubser opened the batting and made slow progress. Very slow. 13 off 12 overs. Yes that slow. Eventually they were both out, as was Chris Cranna, followed by guest player Syed. Finally Colley (18no) and Ballingal (28no) finally started to try to hit the ball, having realised that only hitting through the air was going to work. 70 didn't look enough, even on this field. It
wasn't. Ballingal's 3 for 15 and Harvey's 2 for 15 kept
things interesting for a while as the wind blew and the
rain swept sideways, but Hants made steady progress and
made the total with 3 overs to spare. At least we got the
low point of the season out of the way with the opening
game.
