Ashling v Hampshire Volunteers 22nd May 2005 C. Mason 20 not out, C. Judd 4-21, N. Loubser 2-8, J. Ford 2-14
Groundsman Dick Holden, and his trusty assistants Ian King and Paul Simmonds performed miracles to get the wicket playable on Sunday following two and a half days of rain. It was inevitable that the pitch was going to be a pudding and the outfield was so lush that tigers could have lurked unseen in it. This was always going to be a low-scoring game then. Ashling were in terrible trouble from the start. Dick Holden spooned a gentle catch to cover, and there was a steady procession back to the clubhouse from that point with Paul Colley (1), Ian King (5), Nick Loubser (11) and last weeks hero Chris Judd all failing, in Chriss case he followed last weeks 76 with a second ball duck. Nick Jones (7) held up the collapse for a while, but it was Craig Mason (20 not out,) ably assisted by James Ford (16) who got their heads down and started to give the score a bit of respectability. Although 80 was the lowest total of the season so far, it was always going to take some chasing. Having failed with the bat, there was no way Chris Judd wasnt going to bowl out of his skin, and he charged in for his first over like a runaway train, promptly bowled short and wide and was thrashed for eight in his first over. Shortly afterwards he had taken 4 for 21 , James Ford had 2 for 14 and Hampshire volunteers were 25 for 6! Only Vanross (21) held up the onslaught and when Craig Mason knocked over Taylors off stump to end the innings Hants volunteers had only managed 52 runs. Another week, another win.
