Ashling v Guildford Varsity 15th May 2005 C. Judd 76, N. Jones 51, S.Harvey 3-23, C. Judd 2-6 The sun shone, the ground looked magnificent and Ashling approached the game brimful of confidence after their big win over Havant the week before. Ashling won the toss and decided to bat. The two Holdens got off to a steady start, putting on 33 for the first wicket before Guildford unveiled their secret weapon, the twelve-year old Will Torlot who removed both openers and Nick Loubser in quick succession leaving Ashling with a less than impressive 59 for 4. Unfortunately for Guildford Chris Judd was just getting his eye in by this time and began an onslaught yielding 76 quick runs including eight fours and four sixes, one of which put the match ball over the top of where the lime tree used to stand. After Paul Colley went cheaply, caught by Will Torlot, Nick Jones also decided that today was his day and weighed in with a handy 51 including four fours and three sixes. CJ eventually fell to a dubious lbw decision and Jones holed out in the outfield. There was just time for James Ford to get in on the six-hitting, notching three in a lively innings of 26. Stuart Edwards and Steve Harvey (hello mum) didn't hang around for long, but the total of 218 looked a tall order for Guildford. And so it proved. Chris Judd got into the upper order straight away and his four overs yielded two wickets for six runs. Wickets fell steadily and were shared around a total of seven bowlers used. Although modesty forbids the naming of the player whose figures of 3-22 ended up the best of the day, it might be fair to say that the spell looks better in the scorebook than it did in the flesh! In the end Guildford reached 83 all out with Nigel Wilson top-scoring with 31 including five fours. The game was played in an excellent spirit throughout, and both teams look forward to a repeat fixture next year. Meanwhile the mighty Ashling march on, looking to continue their 100% record next Sunday. Steve
