Ashling v Cavaliers

23rd June 2005

Ashling 143-8, cavaliers 79 all out

Matt Sleep 50 n.o. Derek Grieshaber 4 for 3

This twenty over game was played on a pleasant June evening with everything set fair for a great game. Ashling won the toss and decided to bat.Chris Judd 27) quickly got into his stride and although Paul Colley (2) and debutant Andy Probee (3) went cheaply, Matt Sleep at number four was at home from the start, opening his account with a six, and going on to retire undefeated on 50. Nick Loubser (16), Andy Smith (8) and Bob Traylen (21 not out) came in and scored quickly, and Ashling's total of 143 in 20 overs never looked likely to be caught.
Cavaliers were in immediate trouble as Harvey took two wickets in the first over. Baker (30) and Wade (16) quickly got a grip on matters after that, but the scoring rate seldom matched what was required. Chris Judd weighed in with two useful wickets during an aggressive spell which somewhat stretched the notion of "midweek social cricket." With four wickets standing and the run-rate now completely beyond Cavaliers, the ball was thrown to veteran Derek Grieshaber to bowl the last couple of overs towards the clubhouse. What a spell!! Twelve balls later the last four Cavaliers batsman were back in the dressing room, two caught behind, one bowled and a sharp catch off his own bowling returned what will undoubtedly be one of the performances of the season.
