Ashling v Boxgrove
8th May 2011
Ashling 77-9 (40 overs), Boxgrove 78-4
Boxgrove won by 6
wickets
It could have been different, but it wasn't. As usual we
lost our opening fixture of the season and we have now
not won a game on the first day since about 1878. The
ground looked lovely and the wicket was flat and true.
The outfield was lush and the heavy overnight rain meant
that it would be tough getting a landrover through the
outfield, let alone a cricket ball. Boxgrove won the toss
and put us in, and with Ashling's batting line-up looking
a bit lightweight much rested on the shoulders of South
African opener Nic Loubser... Nic Loubser caught behind
1. Heigh ho. No-one really managed to get the ball off
the square for Ashling and Paul Colley's carefully
compiled 22 was the best effort of the afternoon.
We never
really expected 77 to be enough, but things were looking
good at 25 for 4 with Tom Ballingal bowling superbly for
his 2 for 12 with Henry Slatter and Steve Harvey chipping
in with a wicket each. It wasn't to be though as the
fifth wicket partnership saw Boxgrove home.
The
clubhouse has been much improved thanks to the efforts of
club members and Jane Mottershead during the spring, but
the loss of the Richmond Arms meant a trip to the Fox and
Hounds who at least appeared to have decent beer.
