Ashling v Arundel Grasshoppers

18th July 2010

Ashling 182-9, Arundel 140 all out

Ashling won by 42 runs

South African born British citizen Nic Loubser made another stride towards his knighthood with the first century of the season for Ashling. After being dropped on 4 he never offered another chance, surviving until the 39th over of the alotted 40 ending on 107. Fergus MacLehose made a lively 22 before being unfortunately given out lbw and Johannes Wentzel's 13 was a valuable study in support batting. The Arundel bowling was never less than challenging with C Budd the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 36.

Steve Harvey (me, me) and Adam Shaul had the Arundel batting pinned down with Fergus continuing the good work. After 15 overs Arundel had only managed 45 for 2 and the run rate was starting to get away from them. Arundel's middle order of Standing (20), C Budd (30), and R Budd (30) finally got the chase under way, but ultimately the Ashling bowling ground them dowm. Fergus took 2 for 12, Henry Slatter 2 for 39 and Loubser 2 for 18. Steve Harvey (for it was I) finally mopped up the tail with figures of 3 for 18. Paul Colley restricted Arundel to two byes and also took a sharp catch and a stumping.

This was Ashling's third consecutive win and the latter half of the season can be approached with optimism.
