Ashling v Allstars

8th August 2010

Allstars 185-9 dec, Ashling 160-8

Match drawn

For the second week running Ashling were left scrapping for a draw in a game that they could have won...or lost. With a number of "occasionals" and youngsters in the team the first problem was the apparent lack of bowling options as Allstars batted first. Tom Ballingal's Saturday night in Thursday's had taken the edge off his performance and 0-32 off five overs was not up to his usual standards. Charlie Colley's 2 for 24 off 4 was just what the doctor ordered however, and with Nic Loubser chipping in three wickets early on and the score standing at 86 for 5 things were looking rosy. With an hour and a quarter to play and skipper Harvey's bowling not really on song, a few other options needed to be tried. Simon Cross took a wicket but went for 34 off 3 overs, and Dan Cooke made a useful contribution of 1 for 12 with the most interesting bowling action seen on the ground for some years. Tom's second spell was unplayable as he generated fearsome pace, and with Steve Harvey finding some form in a second spell, Allstars decided that they had had enough and declared on 185 for 9.

Six an over was the asking rate, and Ashling kept it up for 12 overs. Nic Loubser (49) went aerial once too often and picked out the fielder at deep extra cover who held a sharp chance. Tim Ballingal (10) steadied the innings, and when he was joined by brother Tom (36) the pace was picked up again. When Tom was caught in the deep and Simon Cross, son Seb and Dan Cooke all departed quickly, Steve Harvey and Chris Cranna decided that the target was too stiff with 43 runs needed off seven overs and with limited batting resources remaining, and so "shut the shop." Chris and Steve were still there until the third ball of the last over when Chris fell, and Charlie Colley saw out the remaining balls.
