Ashling v Aldwick

31st May 2009

Ashling 244-5 (40 overs); Aldwick 91 all out

Ashling won by 153 runs

Ashling pulled off a big win on the hottest day of the year so far with a magnificent display of power-hitting followed by an efficient demolition of the Aldwick batting lineup.

Ashling won the toss and elected to bat. For the second game running Nic Loubser played a mature and patient innings of 74 (two sixes and six fours) and only lost his wicket in the 37th over. It was Jimmy Taylor who made all the early running, his powerful pull shot resulting in 71 runs (six sixes and four fours) in just over an hour. Matt Battans (2) missed out this time, and Matt Sleep didn’t, scoring 55 (nine fours) very quickly. When Fergus MacLehose went to the crease with 15 balls remaining with instructions to squeeze a few extra runs out, the first four balls went for four, six, four and six again! Fergus was last man out on 26 with Paul Colley playing a chanceless 2 not out in support.

Aldwick were never really in the hunt with wickets falling regularly. Six Ashling bowlers were used with Tom Ballingal returning the best figures of the day with 4 for 16 off 8 overs. Steve Harvey took 2 for 21 off six overs, Fergus took 2 for 6 off a lively six overs. Matt Sleep and Nic Loubser chipped in with one apiece.

The final Aldwick pairing of Craddock and D Belcher succeeded in keeping the teams out of the pub for an extra twenty minutes at the end, but Loubser’s very slow ball finally did for Craddock and the first win of the season was secured.
