Aldwick v Ashling

4th June 2006
Ashling 166-9 (Loubser 78), Aldwick 158-8 (Mason 3-28)

Another cliffhanging finish at 8:20pm saw Aldwick fall just short of Ashling's target of 166 in 40 overs. Absences meant that Ashling put out what was on paper a scratch side, with "non-cricketing" South African Rob Bush making his debut along with ex-Bosham Horse and Groon regular Harry Quilter, and 16 year old James Nash taking over the wicketkeeping gloves.

With Steve Harvey unable to bowl through a shoulder injury Ashling had only three recognised bowlers so upon batting first it was that they posted a decent score. Mick Bleach went early and Matt Sleep follwed soon after. Harry stuck around a long time for his 13, allowing Nic Loubser to start to build an score. It was Loubser around whom the innings was built, but a terrific team effort nonetheless as a succession of batsmen dug in to give Nic the time he needed. 35 extras were a welcome addition and even Derek Grieshaber kept out the last three balls of the penultimate over to allow another 6 runs to be added in the last over. Six runs which proved to be crucial.

Craig Mason (8-1-3-28), Matt Sleep (8-2-0-17) and captain Nic Loubser (8-3-2-21) all performed well, but it was the makeshift bowlers Dave Warr (5-1-1-22) and Rob Bush (4-0-0-28), together with old stager Derek Grieshaber (7-0-2-23) who kept Ashling in it. Aldwick were always behind the run rate, and when Craig Mason, sensibly held back to bowl the final over by skipper Loubser, Aldwick neede 11. They could only manage 3 and a great team effort resulted in another win.
