Ashling v Westbourne 25th June 2006
This was a sporting encounter in what was a new fixture for us. The game took on an unusual format for a 40 over game with a 2 hour tea break to watch the England v Ecuador World Cupo football game. Ashling batted first. Ashling made a steady start with Harvey and Simmonds offering support to Nic Loubser as he built his innings, but it was when Matt Sleep came to the wicket that sparks began to fly with over 60 put on in short time for the fourth wicket. Loubser was one of the last men out on 82 and despite the slow outfield 170 looked a competitive total. Mark Haynes (39) and R
Dicken (35) both offered resistance, but no other
Westbourne batsman got into double figures as Ashling cut
through the order. Seven Ashling players hasd a turn with
the ball, but it was Mason and Sleep who were the pick of
the bowlers. The Westbourne innings was notable for four
catches by Rob Bush, two of which - a dive to the right
and a dive to the left - were amongst the best ever seen
on this ground. |
