Stansted v Ashling 25th May 2008 Stansted won by 5 wickets Mason 42; MacLehose 2-24 Confounding a lousy weather forecast, both teams took the field in bright sunshine in front of the magnificent and imposing Stansted House (see picture on home page.) After last week's triumph Steve Harvey handed over the captaincy to Paul Colley, hoping that some of the magic had rubbed off. Paul got off to a bad start by losing the toss, and Ashling would have to bat on a damp but drying pitch. It could hardly have been worse. Loubser (7) played on, Cranna was bowled around his legs for 5, Harvey (4) played a haymaker when steadiness was required and MacLehose recorded a golden duck. Suddenly Ashing were 18 for 4 after ten overs. Paul Colley then began to play a captain's innings, ably supported by the reliable Craig Mason. for 20 overs they painstakingly took the score forward in a fifty partnership before Colley was out slogging. Debutant Gavin Fisher then came to the crease, and after a rusty start, looked a useful player, adding 13 not out while Mason went on to make 42 before holing out in the last over. 113 was a relatively small total, but at least something to bowl at. MacLehose bowled in a fasion which underlined his lack of match practice with 4 wides in his first over. Upon deciding to switch to off breaks he removed Parsons first ball, Maxwell Gunning having already bowled opener Wootton for 2. Game on! Craig Mason took 2-49 and Loubser bowled tidily. Unfortunately Henwood (66) was in good form at the other end, and rode his luck on being dropped twice to see Stansted home with 12 overs to spare. |
