Ashling v Singleton

14th August 2005

Singleton 133-9 (40 overs), Ashling 125 all out

Rob Lawrence 50 not out, Matt Sleep 34, Craig Mason 3 for 6

Ashling's poor recent run of form continued with a second successive defeat, although this time they had only themselves to blame as they allowed victory to slip away after being in a commanding position. Ashling won the toss and put Singleton in on what looked likely to be a slow wicket with variable bounce. Singleton made steady but sluggish progress with Judd (8-2-14-1) and Mason (8-3-6-3) giving little away. As the innings progressed Ashling used a number of bowlers with Jones (6-2-12-2) and Lawrence (7-0-18-1) proving very difficult to get away. Crocombe was the pick of the Singleton batsmen, finishing 47 not out.

Despite the early loss of Harvey (4) and Loubser (5), the third wicket partnership of Rob Lawrence and Matt Sleep seemed to have taken Ashling to the threshold of victory, taking the score to 90 with Rob having to retire on 53 to go to work! This doesn't happen at Lord's. Chris Judd's topsy-turvy season took another turvy turn as he spooned the ball to silly mid off for a duck soon after arriving at the crease. Nick Jones stuck around for eight overs to steady the side, but still departed for none. Colley followed, bowled for 1 and Dick Holden also failed to trouble the scorers. Nevetheless the ever-reliable Mason and James Ford got together and appeared to be taking Ashling to victory when with ten (count 'em) overs remaining and eight runs required, Ford called for a suicidal second run and was run out. Derek Grieshaber was unable to keep out the next ball and poor old Craig Mason was stranded at the non-striker's end not out 14.
