South Downs College brought a young and hugely enthusiastic side to Ashling for an afternoon of cricket. SDC insisted that their occasional side would be no match for us and the captains agreed that Ashling would bat first. In the event the College players turned out to be no mugs, and while the win was a comfortable one only two players scored more than eleven runs, although since those two scored 166 between them and shared a stand of 124 for the third wicket there was only likely to be one outcome to the game.

Chris Judd was first to go, bowled by Polle for 11. Nick Jones went for the same score soon after whereupon the pairing of Nick Loubser and Mark Crundwell started to take the SDC bowling apart. Nick Loubser's 116 included two sixes and twenty fours, while Mark hit one six and nine fours in his 51. Colley, Ford, Mason and Traylen added ten runs between them before the allotted 35 overs were up.

The college boys were clearly good sportsmen, and had in Morgan an England under-16 schoolboy international. After two wickets fell early to Ford (6-1-22-1) and Judd (7-1-30-1) Wells and Clarke took the score on to 52 before Clarke fell to a sharp catch from Ford off the bowling of Jones. Ford took an even more impressive catch later in the game sprinting to take a skier over his shoulder to dismiss Jones. Although there was never any likelihood of SDC keeping up with the required run-rate, some impressive shots were played by Wells who eventually fell on 47 to a stumping by Paul Colley, again with Jones the bowler. Jones' final figures were 7-1-40-3, Craig Mason chipped in with 6-0-38-2 and Harvey 1-0-4-1. Special mention must go to Ashling's teenage debutants George Bleach and James Nash who were late additions to the squad following injuries and unavailability. With 9 wickets down the ball was tossed to young Nash who quickly saw off the number eleven batsman and finished with figures of 0.3-0-1-1!
