Portsmouth and Southsea v Ashling 18th June 2006
This was a game in which some tremendous individual performances were recorded, but in truth cannot be said to have been one of our more enjoyable afternoons. P & S appeared to be treating the game as a coaching exercise as they arrived with several senior players and a large number of youth players, none of which would have mattered if we had not been lacking most of our front-line bowlers facing a team intent on scoring at any price, including overthrows off the stumps (with over 200 on the board already) and the deliberate singling out of our slower fielders. Things were not improved by some poor fielding and the fact that one of our team seemed to have arrived in a combative mood, untempered by his usual sense of humour which did little for team morale. Given P & S's
attitude to the game, we could only chase the runs, and
after Nic Loubser was run out on 11, which did little to
improve his mood, Matt Sleep's 119 not out was little
short of miraculous and is likely to be the performance
of the season. It was ironic that P & S thought us
unsporting when Matt hit the youngster Tom May for four
consecutive sixes. Not surprisingly we finished well
short on a day most of the team (but not Matt) felt had
been a bit of a waste of time. |
