Emsworth v Ashling 23rd August
2009 Ashling got off to a flying start on a hot day with a fast outfield with Nic Loubser (38) quickly into his stride, supported by fellow opener Owen Salisbury whose streaky but useful 21 quickly took the score past 50 for the opening wicket. Fergus MacLehose was the next big batting hope, but when he returned a soft catch to (very) slow bowler Dunn on 27, and Paul Colley fell for 23, the remaining batsmen managed to edge the score along to 156, which was something of a disappointment given the excellent start. Ashling opened the bowling attack with MacLehose (8-5-7-2) and Harvey (8-2-22-2) and both were quickly among the wickets with Emsworth finding themselves 65-5. Shaun Dunn (40) gave Emsworth some hope, and was supported by Offord (32), but with the required rate creeping ever upwards their departure meant that the remaining batsmen had too much to do and the pressure was off Ashling from the 35th over. News that England had regained the ashes lifted the spirits of both teams in the Coal Exchange after the game. |
