Ashling v DOE Cavaliers

1st August 2010

DOE Cavaliers 150-6 dec, Ashling 129-7

Match drawn

Three families provided more than half of the players in a scratch Ashling team with brothers Tim and Tom Ballingal in the side with father-and-son combos Paul and Charlie Colley, and Simon and Seb Cross. Given our apparent fragility it was put to the opposition that they might like to have first use of the wicket which they were happy to agree to. They were probably somewhat less happy after 12 overs when the score stood at 36 for 5. Tom Ballingal opened up the hill and conceded very little while Charlie Colley's opening spell yielded 1 for 4 off four overs. Steve Harvey kept the pressure on with an early wicket and accurate bowling, and dual-nationality all rounder Nic Loubser was on fire, at one stage boasting figures of three for none! Cavaliers finally started getting their act together when Anthony (50 not out), Longhorn (21) and Langridge (27 not out) got to the crease. Paul Colley added two catches and a stumping to his season's tally and 150 looked gettable.

Ashling got off to a solid start with Nic Loubser hitting the runs and Steve Harvey (9) absolutely not getting the runs, but succeeding in not getting out. Nic (38) was unlucky to be given out caught behind, but Tim Ballingal (33) set about chasing down the target. Unfortunately only Paul Colley (17) offered much support, and when Tom Ballingal picked out the fielder on the outfield for 1 a rearguard action was called for, particularly with Leigh O'Brien now in A and E at St Richards with a fractured and dislocated finger. Focused batting from Simon Cross, Seb Cross and Charlie Colley saw Ashling home with Charlie able to celebrate the saved game by smashing the last ball for four.
