Sunday 13th July 2008 C & H 49 all out Loubser 3-2-2-3 Ashling won by 51 runs This was the re-formed Chidham and Hambrook’s first foray into Sunday cricket following a number of twenty20 thrashes. It was a family occasion as the opposition brought the biggest following of the season to date. The afternoon was played out in the finest sporting traditions and a good time was had by all. C & H felt that they would be happier chasing a total so the captains agreed that Ashling would bat first. Makeshift opener Harvey didn’t last long, bowled by the lively youngster Haskett who ended up with figures of 4-1-2-3! Runs were hard to come by on a slow and sticky wicket and an even slower outfield. Mason’s 24 and Colley’s 15 reflected great application on their part, and Hillier’s 10 late on was a useful contribution, but C&H’s undoing lay in 25 wides; something that the effective wicketkeeping could do nothing about. 100 didn’t look a lot, but on this wicket…… None of the C&H batsmen could really find their way early on and at 6 for 5, and then 11 for 6 it looked like an early start in the pub. The wickets were shared around 8 bowlers with Loubser returning the most impressive figures, taking 3 wickets for two runs. It was to the great credit of Jon Keynes and Steve Clarke that they got their heads down and tried to fashion a competitive position. The early collapse gave them little to work with and the end result was seldom in doubt. Nevertheless C&H will be encouraged by the positive aspects of the game, and might fancy a return game next year. |
