Ashling CC v Arundel Estates

22nd July 2007

Ashling 150 (40 overs; Loubser 90 n.o. : Arundel 81 all out (Shaul 3-7, Mason 3-11)

Finally we got a nice sunny day and the opposition turned up! The wicket was damp and spongy, but drying quickly and the outfield was lush and slow but would probably get quicker. It was no surprise then that Arundel elected to bowl upon winning the toss. Ashling got off to an excruciatingly slow start, taking seven overs to put the same number of runs on the board. As the scoring slowly started to accelerate, wickets started to fall; Craig Mason was first having batted eleven overs for his eight. Andy Webb (17) and Sam Tyson (10) made their contributions and then left. Adam Shaul was the victim of a quite appalling lbw decision from the visiting umpire - who did not seem overly familiar with any of the other rules either. Paul Colley, Steve Harvey and Bob Traylen all went out with the intention of sticking around before they then proceeded to throw their wickets away. Only Sam Waterman managed to get the job done, supporting Nioc Loubser for nearly 20 overs before finally being out for 9 with the last ball of the inninings. The afternoon belonged to Nic Loubser though, whose 90 not out included six sixes and five fours, no mean feat on a ground where anything hit along the ground was unlikely to make it to the boundary.

Craig Mason and Sam Tyson opened the bowling, and in what seemed no time at all, but was actually nine overs, Arundel found themselves 17 for 5. An early finish was avoided when number 8 Theo Barclay got his head down, and ably supported by Lee Farquhar started out on what looked like an impossible task. They added over 60 to the total before Loubser bowled him for 36. The end was not long in coming after that, and ashling were able to record another victory.
