Ashling CC v Aldwick 3rd June2007 Aldwick 111 all out: (Matthews 4-8); Ashling 112-5 (Loubser 56 not out) The bright sunshine confounded the grim forecast for the weekend and Aldwick, having won the toss decided that it was batting weather. They might have thought otherwise had they seen the way the pitch had played last game, and despite the heavy rollering given to the pitch in the week it was clear that there was still plenty of spite in the surface. Only J.Lodge really got a grip, and his 56 was by far the best effort of the innings. Charlie Matthews was making his debut for Ashling, and his remarkable figures of 8-3-8-4 are even more impressive since he could well have been disheartened by his first ball going for four! A word of sympathy for J. Smith who finished up in hospital having taken an accidental beamer right between the eyes. Sorry! Matthews was ably supported by MacLehose (6-3-7-1), Loubser (4.5-0-13-2) and Sleep (8-0-41-2). The Ashling fielding was sharp throughout, and 111 probably wasn't enough, although on this pitch there was always a chance. Nic Loubser and Johnny Medway got off to a steady start, and with 40 plus on the board for the opening wicket it looked like an early finish was in the offing. With Medway out for 10 and Harvey recording a golden duck, Sleep (1) and Colley (8) were also quickly undone by pea-rollers - although to be fair young Declan Belcher (3-14) produced exactly what was required to get wickets, bowling straight and seam-up. Fortunately Fergus MacLehose played some very stylish shots and was finally out for 30, spooning a full toss to mid on with the scores level. Enter club benefactor and website sponsor Mark Crundwell. Having awkwardly dealt with two "pies" gently lobbed at him, he struck the third full toss imperiously to square leg for the matchwinning run. Well done Mark! (internet bill imminent.)
