Ashling v 5th Hants Volunteers

15th May 2011

5th Hants 126 all out, Ashling 127-5

Ashling won by 5 wickets

A good game of cricket played on a chilly May day swung both ways before eventually being settled in our favour with some outstanding individual performances built on a good team spirit with everyone contributing.

5th Hants batted first and found scoring difficult against some accurate bowling from Harvey (8-2-16-1) and Ballingal taking 8 overs to put 20 on the board, nevertheless at 103 for 3 with 13 overs remaining they must have felt confident of putting at least 160 on the board. Fortunately Nic Loubsers came on to take 3 for 15, and with Tom's second spell yielding 3 for 17 the visitors collapsed to 126 all out. Paul Colley took three catches behind the stumps and only Beckett (38) made a major contribution. For a team supposedly lacking bowlers, Ashling used seven different arm twirlers including debutants Simon Hutchin (1 for 2!) and Peter Smith.

Nic Loubser can't buy runs this year and skied one to the wicket keeper on 4. Cranna (7) and Cooke (3) soon followed. Hutchin (4) looked a prospect but offered a catch to extra cover and we were suddenly 34 for 4. For the second week running Paul Colley played a captain's innings and by the time he departed on 21 the game had begun to swing our way. Tom Ballingal scored a flawless 41 not out and Simon Cross looked increasingly comfortable, finishing on 14 not out as the required total was passed.
